Known as “The Abnormal Beauty Company”, DECIEM is the parent company of The Ordinary, NIOD, and other beauty brands & is an industry disruptor with a science first approach to innovation. DECIEM was Co-Founded in 2013 by the late Brandon Truaxe, a visionary who set out to change the beauty industry through authenticity and transparency. WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for an Applied Research Chemist II to join our team on a 12 month contract, completing in August 2025. This position is located at our Head Office in Toronto, Ontario and requires candidates to work on-site 5 days a week.

WHAT YOU’D BE DOING IN THIS ROLE

Applied Research & Development:

  • Research raw materials (RM) to identify the mode of action, recommend the best RMs/actives based on the formula delivery systems to optimize the claims and effectiveness
  • Collaborate with the principal scientists and senior chemists to support selecting RMs/actives and new technologies to complete the assigned New Product Developments (NPDs) and to improve robustness of the formulations
  • Use Design of experiments (DOEs) and other statistical analyzes to mitigate potential stability challenges and find synergism between active ingredients
  • Assist the R&D and Technical Documentation teams to create, review, and approve technical documents to support NPDs
  • Aid to troubleshoot existing products following a thorough analysis, and set up a plan of action
  • Engage in supplier meetings and attend conferences, seminars, and conventions
  • Assist to prepare documentation for SR&ED and grants
  • Aid in patenting new Intellectual Property and Technology
  • Support other R&D functions, Regulatory, Clinical Research, Analytical Development, and other departments
  • Prepare documentation and presentations for internal and external stakeholders

New Product Development Management:

  • Work with the Applied Research principal scientist and Applied Research senior chemists to develop and finalize scientific product concepts
  • Support development of new formulations from ideation to launch following the company’s vision
  • Support to identify, plan, and source new RM technologies for positioning the brand and innovation initiatives for maximum market impact
  • Coordinate with RM suppliers on strategic innovation

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS NEEDED TO GET THE JOB DONE

  • Minimum 3+ years of research related to topical applications or research related to ingredient selection
  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related scientific field
  • Strong knowledge of GLP and GMP guidelines, and regulatory requirements applicable to cosmetic and OTC products
  • Demonstrated research skills and established networking with raw materials suppliers
  • DOE experience would be an asset, familiar with statistical analysis tool
